Book Club is Horizon School’s Reading Enrichment Group.Book Club is an opportunity to read books and discuss them with others.
How are the books selected?
Mrs. Geldnich has selected the first round of books. She is open to suggestions of books that would be good books to read or topics that would be good to find out more about. If you have a suggestion, add it to the Book Club Suggestion List.
How do I get a copy of the book?
Sometimes, Mrs. Geldnich will be able to get multiple copies of the books for you to check out. Most of the time, you will need to find your own copy from the school or public library or borrow it from someone. If you would like, you may choose to purchase the book from the bookstore. You are NOT required to purchase the book.
What happens during our Book Club meeting time?
When our meeting day arrives, you need to be prepared!
You must be finished with the book or very close to the end (if you don’t finish in time, remember the ending may be revealed). If you didn’t find time to even start the book, please check the Book Club website and then let Mrs. Geldnich know your book choice for next month’s discussion.
You need to be ready to discuss what happened in the book. You will be responsible for creating "FAT" and "SKINNY" questions when you get to Book Club.
What is a "FAT" question? A question that has "meat" to the answer. It makes you think and it requires you to share your opinion. It may also be called an interpretive question. If you need a YES or NO answer, you must also attach the question WHY? to be answered.
What is a "SKINNY" question? A question that has a factual answer. It is a literal question. You usually find the answer in the text of the book. There is no room for opinion in this answer.
Do you need to have the book with you during Book Club?
It would be nice if you did, but if you don’t, that’s okay, just make sure you have notes from your reading so you can contribute to the discussion.
