Summer of the Monkeys- Wilson Rawls
Summer of the Monkeys is about a fourteen year old boy named Jay Berry who grows up in the rural, newly settled parts of the United States. Jay Berry helps his family run their farm and he tries to earn enough money to buy a pony and a gun. One day their only cow escapes and Jay Berry has to go looking for it in the nearby valley. He goes down into the valley and finds their cow but then decides to look around because he isn't normally allowed down in the valley. He sees some monkeys in a tree and is very frightened because he had never seen a monkey before. He runs back to his house and tells everyone what he saw. His mother sends him to his grandpa's store to get groceries so Jay Berry tells his grandpa about the monkeys. His grandpa tells Jay Berry about the reward from the circus for whoever catches the monkeys. He also helps Jay Berry come up with a plan to catch the monkeys.
